You are what you eat

I am waiting for inspiration to write on this matter. So meanwhile, go read something else.

You need to eat your breakfast

Its always a very frustrating experience for me when I enter my class at 8:00am and I find a student fast asleep with his/her head bent over the table. I wake him/her up and he/she grudginglly raised his/her head, rubbed his/her eyes then went back to sleep. A second prompting, which often requires more forcely methods like a raised voice and a shake on his/her shoulders, will do the work of waking him/her up. This is quickly followed by an order to go and wash his/her face.

Why this big drama, this early in the morning? I often followed up the child's return from the toilet with a question. "Have you had breakfast this morning?" The answer is a predictable "No". Breakfast is probably the most difficult meal for all teenagers. This is a global teenage issue. I am a parent of 4 grown up girls and I have gone through this in the past. None of my girls like to take their meal at 6am in the morning. My third girl, doesn't eat breakfast on purpose. When I asked why, she said she often has to go to the toilet after breakfast. And because, she was ofteh late in coming down for breakfast, she had to visit the toilet in school. Problem is, her teacher NEVER allows her to leave the class that early in the morning. I failed to support her by calling the school about this, let alone going to school to meet the teacher concerned and resolve the problem. On hindsight, it is something I regreted not doing.Being a teacher, I use my disgression in allowing students to vist the toilet. But I digress.
Why is breakfast an important meal - in fact it is THE most important meal of the day? I once received an email with this message:
Eat breakfat like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a beggar.

Why are students finding it so hard to eat breakfast?

Maths & Science Fair 2009

According to the school calendar, the event was supposed to be Maths & Science Society Day. It was scheduled to be in August. (NO) Thanks to the H1N1 outbreak, we had the date postphoned to October and for some reason or other to November. Planning started as early as March. The department was ambitious and wanted to organise a week long affair but we had to be less ambitious, and cut it down to two days. November 6 & 7 were the dates chosen unanimously and they fall right after the final exams. We practically had ONE day to put up an exhibition, science booths, and two competitions. To quote a famous saying, "All's well that ends well". There was a BIG sigh of relief that went round the department and (I am just guessing this), the (acting)pricipal's office. The CEO, was impressed, and he in turn impressed it on US (the department) that there should be a bigger and better show next year!!

Nutrition: Gain or Lose

Hi All.
I was going to create a new blog for the Essentials Intel Teach course project. Then on second thought, this blog IS part of the project, so why not just continue where we (Su & me) left off.
So, to start off with, welcome to the blog. Here we can share information on health issues in general and in particular those affecting teenagers.

I was a teenager (when huh?) shhh.. let's keep that a secret.. and I knew how concerned we were about how we looked.. especially we girls. I wanted the hour glass figure like the late Saloma ( you all know her, right? -Biduanita Negara, a national treasure)
Now, with TV programmes like Biggest Looser and America's Top Supermodel, Magazines like Vogue, FHM, Cosmopiltan, Jelita, Cleo and hundreds more, the image of thin being beautiful is influencing the world-view point of beauty.
Used to be, beauty images of Sita, a voluptous full-figure Hindu Goddess, was the trend and then it was OK to be on the heavy side. But now pencil-thin, anorexic figures of caucasian models are being fed into the faces of teenages. So powerful is the image, that we Asians, get drawn into the thought that thin is beautiful. Is it? What is beauty anyway? It's only skin deep right?
Give us your thoughts/comments here.

Healthy Eating Habits - teenage issues

NUTRITION: Gain or lose?

I am starting this entry to discuss health-related teenage issues - in particular healthy eating habits. I am a teacher in Sapura Smart School and I teach teenagers Science and Biology. Nutrition is one of the topics thought in the secondary school, in Form 2 Science and in Form 4 Biology.
Nutrition is an important issue to fast-growing teenagers. I this blog I hope to create interest in my students on healthy eating, the key factor to a healthy long lifestyle.

You are what you eat

A healthy diet can have numerous benefits physically and mentally. A good diet may enable you to learn better in school and excel on an emotional and social level successfully. As far as junk food is concerned, a small amount on a rare occasion is allowed. I would try to encourage healthy snacks at least 85-90% of the time. I am a firm believer that parents have the greatest influence on their children. The parents can ultimately shape the child's future in a positive or negative way. Lead by example.

Archimedes

A great man! Archimedes was the greatest mathematician of his age. His contributions in geometry revolutionised the subject.

Sains dalam bahasa malaysia 2014

When I did my primary education, I spent 1 whole year doing it using BM. Then I moved to an English school, and I spent the next decade learning in English. I have become very comfortable at speaking and writing in English so when I graduated from University and became a trained teacher, I was not at my best, teaching Science in Bahasa Melayu (now Bahasa Malaysia). However, in 2003, the Ministry of Education, made us change the language of instruction of teaching Science to English, so I came full circle. I was so happy to go back to speaking English in class. But lo and behold, like the tides, the policy has changed again. In 2014, my 31st year teaching Science I have to go back teaching Science in BM again. I don't know whether to laugh or to cry. Maybe, I will be dead or retired by then, which ever comes first.
